Cheesy Kielbasa and Pierogi Skillet

This Cheesy Kielbasa and Pierogi Skillet is one of those dinners that checks all the boxes for me. It’s easy, cheesy, comforting, and made entirely in one skillet! You have smoky kielbasa, tender pierogies, sautéed onions, cheddar cheese, sour cream, and green onions all brought together in a creamy, savory sauce.

And this one is GOOD!

I used mini frozen pierogies, and they were perfect for this skillet. There’s no need to boil them first or dirty another pot. They cook right in the skillet with the chicken broth and soak up all that delicious flavor.

One of the most important parts of this recipe happens right at the beginning. When you brown the kielbasa, leave that rendered fat in the skillet! We’re going to use it to cook the onion and build even more flavor into the dish.

This is simple comfort food at its best.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound kielbasa, sliced

  • 1 onion, diced

  • 1 cup chicken broth

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

  • 16 ounces frozen pierogies, mini or regular

  • 1/2 cup sour cream

  • 4 green onions, chopped, plus more for topping

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Directions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.

  2. Add the sliced kielbasa and cook until nicely browned and some of the fat has rendered into the skillet.

  3. Using a slotted spoon, remove the browned kielbasa from the skillet and set it aside. Leave the rendered fat in the pan.

  4. Add the diced onion directly to the skillet and cook in the rendered kielbasa fat for 3 to 4 minutes, or until the onion begins to soften.

  5. Pour in the chicken broth.

  6. Add the garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir everything together, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet.

  7. Add the frozen pierogies to the skillet.

  8. Cover and cook over medium-high heat for about 5 minutes, or until the pierogies are heated through and tender. If using larger pierogies, they may need a few additional minutes.

  9. Reduce the heat and return the browned kielbasa to the skillet.

  10. Add the sour cream, chopped green onions, and shredded cheddar cheese.

  11. Gently stir everything together until the sour cream is incorporated, the cheddar cheese is completely melted, and the kielbasa and pierogies are coated in the creamy cheese sauce.

  12. Remove from the heat and top with additional chopped green onions.

  13. Serve immediately while everything is hot and cheesy!

Don't Get Rid of That Kielbasa Fat!

When you brown the kielbasa, it releases some of its fat into the skillet. Whatever you do, don't clean out that pan!

That rendered fat is packed with smoky flavor, and we're going to use it to sauté the onion. As the onion cooks, it picks up all that goodness left behind by the kielbasa.

Then, when you add the chicken broth, give the bottom of the skillet a good scrape. All those browned bits from the sausage get incorporated right into the sauce.

It's such a simple step, but it adds so much flavor without adding another ingredient.

Frozen Pierogies Make This So Easy

I used mini frozen pierogies for this recipe, and I loved them! You can absolutely use regular-size pierogies if that's what you have.

And there's no need to boil them first.

Add the pierogies straight from the freezer to the skillet with the chicken broth. Cover the pan and let them cook until they're tender and heated through.

The mini pierogies cook quickly, making this a great dinner for those nights when you want something hearty without spending forever in the kitchen.

Make It Cheesy!

Once the pierogies are tender, it's time for my favorite part.

Return that beautifully browned kielbasa to the skillet and then add the sour cream, cheddar cheese, and green onions.

The sour cream adds creaminess and a little tang, while a full cup of cheddar cheese melts into the broth to create a rich, cheesy sauce that coats the kielbasa and pierogies.

Just make sure you reduce the heat before adding the sour cream. You want it to melt smoothly into the sauce rather than cooking it over a hard boil.

An Easy One-Skillet Dinner

There is so much to love about this Cheesy Kielbasa and Pierogi Skillet, but the fact that it only requires one pan might be at the top of the list!

You don't have to boil the pierogies separately, there aren't a ton of vegetables to chop, and the whole thing comes together quickly.

Smoky kielbasa, tender pierogies, sautéed onions, sour cream, cheddar cheese, and green onions all in one skillet? YES PLEASE!

It's simple, filling, ridiculously cheesy, and exactly the kind of easy comfort food I love.
